Product Description
Canesten Thrush Duo Oral Capsule & External Cream is a very convenient, easy way to both calm the itch and clear a thrush infection. The on-the-go single-dose oral capsule which contains fluconazole works from within to clear the thrush infection, while the double strength thrush cream containing clotrimazole effectively calms the itch.
Speak to your doctor before purchasing this product if it your first time having thrush.
Ingredients
The oral capsule:
The active substance is fluconazole at a strength of 150mg. The other ingredients are colloidal silicon dioxide, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, maize starch and sodium lauryl sulphate. The capsule shell contains brilliant blue FCF (E133), titanium dioxide (E171) and gelatine. The printing ink contains shellac, black iron oxide (E172) and propylene glycol. The cream:
The active substance is clotrimazole at a strength of 2% w/w. The other ingredients are benzyl alcohol, polysorbate 60, sorbitan stearate, cetyl palmitate, cetostearyl alcohol, octyldodecanol and purified water.
Usage Instructions
Please ensure this medication is used in line with the manufacturer’s directions.
- The single dose capsule is to treat thrush at the site of infection and should be swallowed whole with a glass of water, with or without food.
- The external cream is to treat the itching and soreness of the vulva. Apply thinly and evenly to the area around the entrance of the vagina, 2-3 times a day and smooth in gently. Use until the symptoms of infection disappear. Do not put the cream in your mouth or swallow it.
- Symptoms should reduce within 2 days of treatment. If no improvement after 7 days, tell doctor. If the infection returns after 7 days another capsule may be taken.
- Recurrent attacks of thrush: speak to your doctor especially if you have had more than two episodes in the past 6 months.
- Treating your sexual partner: Apply to the end of the penis 2 or 3 times a day for up to two weeks. Also treating your partner may help to reduce recurrent attacks even if they are not showing symptoms.
Warnings and Precautions
This product may reduce the effectiveness of rubber contraceptives, such as condoms or diaphragms - use alternative precautions for at least five days after using this product.
May cause dizziness – Do not drive, operate tools or machinery if so.
Do not use:
- If you have an allergy to any of the ingredients in this pack or other medicines you have used to treat fungal infections.
- If you have not been previously diagnosed by your doctor as having thrush.
- If under 16 or over 60
- If you are taking any of the following medicines: Astemizole, Terfenadine, Cisapride, Pimozide, Quinidine or Erythromycin.
- If pregnant or breastfeeding.
Do not use and speak to your doctor before using if:
- Women: You have irregular vaginal bleeding, abnormal vaginal bleeding or a blood-stained discharge, ulcers, blisters or sores of the vagina or vulva, lower abdominal pain, pain, or difficulty in passing urine, fever or chills, feeling sick or vomiting, diarrhoea, a foul smelling discharge from the vagina.
- Men: Your sexual partner does not have thrush, you have sores, ulcers or blisters on your penis, abnormal discharge or odour from your penis, pain or difficulty passing urine.
- Previous history of a sexually transmitted infection
- You have a medical condition or illness including liver, kidney, or heart conditions.
- You have an intolerance to some sugars – contains lactose.
- You are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription.

Side effects
Like all medicines, Canesten Thrush Duo can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
As with all medicines, some people may be allergic to the capsule or the cream. Seek urgent medical attention.
Common side effects are:
- Headache
- Stomach discomfort, diarrhoea, feeling sick, vomiting
- Increases in blood tests of liver function
- Rash
